Chapter VI - The Sea Where the Sun Dies
Section 3: Intrigues in the Shadow of Power

The cold January of 1492 brought with it an air of irrevocable change. The kingdom of Granada, the last vestige of Muslim power on the Iberian Peninsula, had fallen to the Catholic Monarchs. In Rome, Alexander VI was preparing to be presented as the new successor of Peter, consolidating Rodrigo Borgia’s power as pontiff. The world seemed to be tilting toward Isabel and Fernando, who now dominated not only the peninsula but also ecclesiastical decisions, thanks to the royal patronage granted by the pope.

Far from the battlefields, in a Roman loggia lit by candelabra, other stories were being woven. Jorge Comneno, wrapped in a dark cloak that accentuated his imperial bearing, watched the gathering with the patience of a strategist. Beside him, the Lady of Carpio, a woman whose blood mingled the lineage of Fernando the Saint with the cunning of conspirators such as don Juan Manuel, was engaged in animated conversation with a young monk who had timidly entered the room.

—Here comes my nephew —Jorge announced, with a faint smile on his lips.

The Lady of Carpio looked up, interested.

—What a charming young man —she said, her eyes following the newcomer.

Alberto, the young friar, approached with cautious steps. His gaze, full of wonder, took in the room’s splendor: the tapestries embroidered with gold thread, the statues that seemed to breathe, and the crystal goblets reflecting the light like trapped stars.

—Alberto —Jorge said, inclining his head slightly toward his nephew—. Come, I want you to meet the Lady of Carpio.

The young man bowed respectfully, taking the lady’s hand to kiss her cloak. The Lady of Carpio looked at him with a mixture of curiosity and tenderness. There was something in him, in his youth and his air of innocence, that aroused an interest she could not ignore.

—It is an honor, my lady —Alberto said in a soft but firm voice.

The conversation flowed naturally. They spoke of books and music, of theology and the intrigues of the papal court. As time passed, the distance between the lady and Jorge seemed to dissolve, smoothing the rough edges that had once separated them. Now, in this space full of art and power, they shared a tacit understanding, a play of glances and carefully chosen words.

—It is remarkable how fate weaves our lives together —the Lady of Carpio remarked, casting a meaningful glance toward Jorge—. I never imagined that our families would become entwined in this time of change.

Jorge nodded, but his eyes strayed toward Alberto, as though seeking something beyond the words. The Lady of Carpio did not miss the gesture. Although she did not show it, she was certain that behind his courteous facade Jorge concealed feelings deeper than he was willing to admit.

Meanwhile, Farid, the enigmatic Arab musician, played a melancholy melody at the back of the room. His song seemed to contain centuries of history, joining the sands of Granada to the marbles of Rome. The notes floated in the air, intertwining with the stories and secrets shared in whispers.

Alberto, captivated by the music, felt something stir within him. Perhaps it was the weight of the moment, perhaps the echo of a future he did not yet understand, but in that instant he knew his life was changing.

And so, on a night that marked the end of one era and the beginning of another, the lives of Jorge, the Lady of Carpio and Alberto became entwined beneath the shadow of the Borgias, while Farid went on singing, as though his voice could stop time and capture the essence of that encounter.
