Fernando V. Zamora

I am Fernando V. Zamora—Fernando Valentín Zamora Díaz—a Mexican writer, film critic, researcher and lecturer. At Onirikón I write about literature, film, music, art, psychoanalysis, history and religious experience. As a poet and musician, I use the pen name Ángel Comneno.

My public work is organized across two complementary sites: fernando-v.com brings together my professional, academic and consulting work; onirikon.com is my artistic and cultural project, including literary, cinematic and musical creation. Both sites belong to the same author and link to one another so that this relationship remains unambiguous.

A life cannot be reduced to a list of credentials; neither should an author page attempt it. This page gathers only what a reader needs to know who is responsible for the writing at Onirikón, what experience sustains it and where its principal claims can be checked.

Experience

I have published in print media since 1992. The Morelia International Film Festival documented my work as a film critic from 1995 onward, first at Reforma and later at Milenio Diario (Morelia International Film Festival, 2004). Since 2000, I have written a film column associated with Milenio; Hombre de Celuloide appears in its cultural supplement Laberinto. In 2022, I contributed to its thousandth issue with the essay “¿Cómo será el cine del futuro?”.

I am the author of the novels Por debajo del agua and Triángulo de amor y muerte. My academic work has addressed Mesoamerican identity, art in New Spain, cathedral music, religious iconography and psychoanalysis.

I am passionate about contributing to the renewal of Nahuatl literature as a living contemporary practice. I am studying Chicontepec Nahuatl—the Nahuatl variety of the Huasteca region of Veracruz—alongside Classical Nahuatl in order to compose my own haiku in Nahuatl and to engage the language as a medium of present literary creation.

Education

I hold a doctorate in Psychoanalysis from Universidad Intercontinental, a master’s degree in Art History from UNAM, a master’s degree in Social Anthropology from Universidad Iberoamericana and a law degree. I also hold a degree in Communication from Universidad Iberoamericana. The corresponding professional qualifications were checked against the Mexican Ministry of Education’s National Registry of Professionals; licence numbers are not reproduced here for privacy.

I studied Philosophy and Theology at the Pontifical University of the Holy Cross in Rome. For the autumn semester of 2026, I was admitted to the University of Fribourg’s Master of Arts in Theological Studies, specializing in Orthodox and Inter-Christian Studies. I am currently an Orthodox hierodeacon.

How I work

The range of subjects demands a simple discipline: distinguish fact, interpretation and metaphor. When I write criticism, I begin with the work I have seen or heard; when I present a historical, academic or biographical claim, I look for a primary or institutional source; when I make a judgement, I acknowledge it as my own and therefore open to dispute.

Onirikon does not exist to cover every subject. It exists to relate objects that are usually kept apart: a film and a historical wound; a record and the way the body receives time; a religious image and the power that turns it into ritual. Erudition matters only when it allows us to see more clearly.

Author identity

Fernando Valentín Zamora Díaz, Fernando V. Zamora, Fernando Zamora and Fernando V name the same person. Ángel Comneno is my pen name as a poet and musician. These names do not represent different authors.

Corrections and transparency

If a source demonstrates that a published claim is wrong, the text is corrected and given an authentic update date. Dates are not changed to create an appearance of novelty. Citations identify what comes from others; experience and judgement remain visible.

An earlier author record associated with the Institute of Philological Research at UNAM listed 1975 as my year of birth. That date is incorrect: I was born in 1969. The current record in the Encyclopedia of Literature in Mexico now gives 1969.

Nota biográfica en español

Me apasiona contribuir a la revitalización de la literatura náhuatl como una práctica contemporánea viva. Para ello estudio náhuatl de Chicontepec —la variante náhuatl de la Huasteca veracruzana— junto con náhuatl clásico, con el propósito de componer mis propios haikus en náhuatl y trabajar la lengua como un medio de creación literaria presente.

Una ficha anterior de autor asociada con el Instituto de Investigaciones Filológicas de la UNAM registró 1975 como mi año de nacimiento. Ese dato es incorrecto: nací en 1969. La ficha vigente de la Enciclopedia de la Literatura en México ya consigna 1969.
