Labyrinth with the Samurai Child
By Angel Comneno
I. Sonnet of Misunderstanding
Green labyrinth of divine dread,
marble with moss, a tousled archangel.
The samurai child smiles: “you never understood,”
an echo of a river long sedimented.
Behind him, the drunkard—pearl and sin—
strokes his hair with careless fingers.
I count my cats: seven have fled.
The monastery oozes its frozen liquor.
Mother-Alzheimer opens the final gate,
her key made of glass, the world groans.
“He is the only one,” I repeat, and the air lies.
The empty room is an offering:
neither God nor demon, only geometry.
Patience is dust sent by dust.
